How to Read CBD Lab Results

If you’ve ever picked up a CBD product and wondered what all those numbers on the lab report actually mean, you’re not alone. At Metta Hemp, transparency isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a promise. That’s why every product we make includes a QR code linking directly to detailed third-party lab results.

This guide will walk you through exactly how to read CBD lab results, what each section means for your safety, and why lab testing matters in the hemp industry.

What Is a Certificate of Analysis (COA)?

A Certificate of Analysis, or COA, is an official document produced by an independent laboratory that breaks down exactly what’s inside your CBD product. It shows cannabinoid potency and confirms that what’s on the label matches what’s in the package.

At Metta Hemp, we work exclusively with state-certified laboratories that use methods approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Every batch of hemp flower, gummy, vape, tincture, or concentrate undergoes potency testing before it reaches your hands. This potency report shows you the exact cannabinoid content — including CBD, THC, and other beneficial compounds.

Note: This guide focuses on reading potency reports (cannabinoid content). Hemp products may also undergo separate testing for contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials, but those are different reports.

Why Third-Party Testing Matters

Here’s an uncomfortable truth: A 2017 study found that approximately 26% of CBD products tested had less CBD than advertised, and over 20% contained undisclosed THC.

Without independent lab verification, you’re taking the manufacturer’s word for it.

Third-party testing eliminates this guesswork. When a lab has no connection to the company selling the product, you get unbiased, accurate results.

Breaking Down the Lab Report: What to Look For

1. The Header: Verify Authenticity

The top of your COA contains critical information to confirm you’re viewing a legitimate report. Here’s what you’ll see on a Metta Hemp lab report:

(P.S. If you want to follow along with this breakdown, check out the lab report for our CBD Rosin Gummies.)

  • Sample ID and Manifest Number: Unique identifiers that track your specific batch (e.g., “1A-GHEMP-2501060001-0008”). This should correspond to the batch information on your product label.
  • Product Name and Type: Describes what was tested (e.g., “#2743-1 CBD F/S Rosin Gummies” listed as “Infused (edible)”)
  • Client Information: Should list “Metta Hemp Company” with our Denver, Colorado address
  • Test Dates: Look for the Receive Date, Test Date, and Report Date. These should all be recent and close together, showing the product was tested promptly.
  • Sample Condition: Should state “Good,” confirming the product arrived at the lab in proper condition for accurate testing
  • Test Performed: Specifies what was analyzed (commonly “Potency” for cannabinoid content, with separate reports for contaminants)
  • Method Reference: Details the testing methodology used (e.g., “GH-OP-06”). The scope should mention certification by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and specify the analytical method used — typically High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
  • Report Number: A unique identifier for this specific lab report (e.g., “A-P-2501060001-V3”)

2. Cannabinoid Profile: What’s Inside

This section tells you exactly which compounds are present and in what amounts.

KEY CANNABINOIDS:

  • CBD (Cannabidiol): The primary non-intoxicating cannabinoid
  • Delta-9 THC: Must be 0.3% or less for legal hemp products
  • CBDA and THCA: Acidic precursors that convert to CBD and THC when heated
  • Minor Cannabinoids: CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV — these contribute to the entourage effect

For full-spectrum products like many of Metta Hemp’s offerings, you should see multiple cannabinoids listed. If a product claims “full-spectrum” but only shows CBD, it’s likely an isolate.

The Margin of Error: Don’t panic if the lab shows 23mg CBD when the label says 25mg. The FDA allows up to 20% variance, and labs have natural margins of error.

3. Understanding Lab Terminology

Cannabinoids are listed with several measurement formats:

  • mg/unit: The absolute amount in each gummy, joint, or serving
  • mg/g: Milligrams per gram (concentration by weight)
  • percent: Percentage of total weight

You may also see these key terms on your Metta Hemp potency report:

  • ND (Not Detected): The cannabinoid amount is below the Limit of Quantification — essentially zero or negligible
  • LOD (Limit of Detection): The smallest amount the lab equipment can detect
  • LOQ (Limit of Quantification): The smallest amount that can be accurately measured
  • mg/unit: Milligrams per serving/piece (e.g., per gummy)
  • mg/g: Milligrams per gram—concentration by weight
  • percent (%): Percentage of total weight
  • Total THC: Calculated as Δ9-THC + (THCA × 0.877) to account for potential conversion when heated
  • Total CBD: Calculated as CBD + (CBDA × 0.877) to account for potential conversion when heated
  • THC:CBD Ratio: Shows the proportion of THC to CBD (e.g., 1:15.62 means 15.62 times more CBD than THC)

The Metta Hemp Difference

Colorado has some of the strictest hemp regulations, and we meet these high standards:

  • CDPHE-Certified Testing: Our lab uses methods certified by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)
  • HPLC Analysis: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Diode Array Detection provides accurate, reliable results
  • Batch-Level Testing: Each product batch gets its own unique lab report — what you scan is what you get
  • 21-Cannabinoid Panel: We test for a comprehensive range of cannabinoids, not just CBD and THC
  • Total Cannabinoid Calculations: Our reports include Total THC and Total CBD calculations that account for acidic precursors (THCA and CBDA)
  • Legal Compliance: Every batch is verified to meet federal THC limits (under 0.3%)
  • QR Code Access: Instant transparency — scan the code on your product and see the exact results for that batch

Since our earliest days as Colorado hemp pioneers, transparency has been at the heart of everything we do. We test every batch, publish every result, and stand behind every product. Your wellness journey deserves verifiable quality, not blind trust.
